McGraw-Hill, New York. 1964. 325 pages. First edition, third printing stated. Signed by the author and former science editor of The New York Times, directly to the front endpaper. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Light rubbing along edges with a touch of sunning along panel edges. Original dust jacket with $6.95 price intact on jacket flap. Attractive DJ shows minor light rubbing. First published in 1964, this title quickly became a best seller, and still serves as an authoritative, comprehensive account of the early scientific movement to find intelligent civilizations beyond Earth. It was highly acclaimed for bridging the gap between rigorous astrophysics and public fascination, ultimately winning the 1965 National Book Award for Science, Philosophy, and Religion. A rare signed printing from 1964, by the man known as "the dean" of science writers. VG/VG+.
