'When Dr. Blalock was asked what area of Surgery Bill specialized in he responded 'difficult surgery.' He was described as being unusually mature and competent with impeccable judgment, very cool under pressure, and had a charisma which made him attractive to almost all to whom he came into contact' (Longmire Surgical Society Page on UCLA Health Web site). Longmire 'was the primary assistant to Dr Alfred Blalock when the first successful blue baby operation was performed in 1944 a ground breaking procedure that allowed infants with severe heart deformities to live a more normal life. His outstanding performance as a resident warranted a general thoracic surgical appointment, but none was available at that time. Being eager to retain him in the department, Dr. Blalock appointed him in 1948 as an associate professor in charge of plastic surgery. Fortuitously in that same year a new medical school at UCLA was being opened and faculty recruitment was underway. At age 35 Longmire became the first chairman of surgery - a position in which he served with great distinction until 1976' ('In Memoriam', University of California Academic Senate Web site).
