In 1963, Lenora Dorin took a part-time job working for Mrs. Clara Brady. Mrs Brady's husband, Fred, was an invalid. Mrs. Brady had the responsibility of supporting him and their two daughters, Evelyn and Carol. Then, unexpectedly, Mrs. Brady herself was taken ill. She passed on. Caring for the family, Lenora Dorin asks Mr. Brady if he would like to come and live with her and her husband. His face lights up and he nods acceptance. And, she feels, Mrs Brady too is somehow present, relieved in knowing that bher family will be taken care of. But the situation is not an easy one, for it will be a white family moving in with a black one. For the girls, especially, it is a hard change to make. People are critical, but offer no help. Evelyn and Carol face the changing problems that life brings. True happiness comes from the knowledge that we are of some use in this world. Lenora Dorin has found her good use, and shares it with us, its grief and happiness, in "My Adopted Family.".
