About this Item
Thick octavo, especially bound by the publisher in full morocco and lettered "James A. Farley: Addresses" on the front cover, slightly rubbed. First collected edition, with addresses published between 1935 and 1940. A major presentation copy, inscribed by Farley: "To Claude G. Bowers, with every good wish to a real friend whom I respect and admire and who has been great assistance to me in the days that have passed. You may be able Claude to fill in some quiet moments looking thru these volumes, James A. Farley, March 17, 1941," on the front free endpaper ----- Farley, the chairman of the New York and National Democratic Committees, served as US Postmaster General under Roosevelt. Bowers, the popular historian, who wrote "The Tragic Era," an anti-Black interpretation of Reconstruction (severely critiqued by fellow historian W.E.B. Du Bois), served as ambassador to Spain and Chile under Roosevelt ---- The volume contains numerous addresses by Farley, including "Case for Franklin D. Roosevelt," "A Covenant with the People," "History and Functions of the National Committee," "The New Era," "John Marshall," "Building Citizens," "A Challenge to America," "Postal Affairs and the National Economy," "The Problem of Agriculture," "The Spirit of the New Deal," "Dictatorship - A Myth," "Ireland," "Nationless Nation Maker," "The Irish Influence in American History," "Haverstraw - My Home Town," "Party Responsibility," "Education and its Responsibility," "The Opportunity of Education," "The Liberal Spirit," "Three Years of Roosevelt," "Democratic Achievement," and "Closing Address of the 1936 Presidential Campaign." A jaw-dropping presentation with a distinguished provenance. Seller Inventory # ABE-5377572433
