Item description from seller

LUNARDI, Vincent. An Account of the First Aerial Voyage in England, In a Series of Letters to his Guardian, Chevalier Gherardo Compagni. London: Printed for the Author; and sold at the Pantheon; also by the Publisher, J. Bell, at the British Library, Strand; and at Mr. Mollini's, Woodstock-Street, 1784. 1st ed. 8vo. [4], 66, [2]pp. Two engraved folding plates. With the half title and publisher's ad in the rear. Issued without the portrait found in some copies. Signed by Lunardi on the half-title. Stitched self wrappers, uncut, soiling to the first leaf. Very good. Brockett 7816 (this edition, without the portrait). Maggs 387:182 (with the portrait, but not noting the issue point). Gamble 695. Liebman-Wahl 1021. Tissandier, p. 58. Hodgson, p. 121. An important book, describing the first flight in England, which was taken by Lunardi, secretary to an Italian diplomat, on 15 September 1784. The balloon is described in Hodgson (quoting from contemporary sources, including the present title), and notes the obviously amateurish quality of Lunardi's work. One of the difficulties he faced was public skepticism fueled by the traditional British distaste for anything originating from France, where there was at that time a huge craze for ballooning following the success of the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. The flight was described in this title in a fashion that is more "vivacious and picturesque" than it is literary. The Account, according to Hodgson, was published simultaneously in two versions: one with a portrait by Bartolozzi after Cosway, costing 5 shillings; and one without the portrait for a half-crown. Ultimately, three more editions were published before the end of the year. The two plates here show the balloon and a labeled diagram of the apparatus Lunardi set up to fill it.…
