Item description from seller

Small 4to. Red cloth, pictorial dust jacket. xiv, 364pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Spine rather sunned; endpapers a tad age toned per usual, else tight and internally near fine; lacks dust jacket. A tight, quite attractive first edition of what Rodney C. Loehr critiques as "A classic work on creative conspiracies, espionage and counter-espionage." Tipped in facing the half-title page is a near fine good content Typed Letter Signed from Milton, 1p, 7" X 10½", Washington, DC, 2 December 1940. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). On "Cosmos Club" letterhead, Milton thanks an admirer for birthday wishes. In part: "I appreciate your felicitations. Every now and then some one seems to remember pleasantly 'The Age of Hate'. You will be interested to know that, even though the book came out in the fall of 1930, I still get a small royaty check from it, twice a year, which is an expression of appreciation of that book, from over generous readers and friends." Signed large and bold in full in black ink. "The Age of Hate: Andrew Johnson and the Radicals" was Milton's first book. Milton (1894-1955) was a part-time historian and full-time newspaper editor.
