Item description from seller

SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR at front end page -"To Henry D. Pierce, Esquire, with best regards Charles E. Taylor, M.D. Feb. 2/96". ASSOCIATION COPY, Henry D. Pierce (1848-1929) was a prominent Indianapolis lawyer, businessman, and described as a 'globetrotter", and was said to have explored all the principal rivers of the world. For many years he was interested in the construction of an interoceanic canal through Nicaragua, and was a director and vice president of a Nicaragua Canal Company. This is perhaps how he ended up meeting Taylor in St. Thomas. Charles Edwin Taylor was the preeminent late-19th-century authority on the history and social conditions of the Danish West Indies. He also participated in island government. Very Good, boards soiled, spine darkened with a couple of chips to the cloth, a few corners creased, hinges starting yet holding nicely, and several pages with marginal pencil marks, presumably marked by Pierce, whose signature is in pencil at the gutter of the Preface page. Bound in original decorative red cloth, 120 ppp. with 6 pp. of ads and ads at front and rear end papers. Numerous black and white photographs. An interesting Association copy featuring the signatures of two quite interesting late 19thc figures.
