From a quaint and sleepy market town, to one of the south-east s key development towns, the ever changing face of Ashford has not been without its turbulent periods.
From the trials and tribulations of wartime through to a war on planning , the popular Kent town has had many a rollercoaster ride when it comes to planning. Many needless sacrifices have been made over the decades and whilst a town needs to develop, many question the motives and set precedence of decision makers past and present that have allowed a substantial cross-section of the town's rich heritage to be destroyed.
Even today experts conclude that the town is often dismissive against heritage and rather more celebratory over new projects that await the town. Many fear that Ashford is becoming more and more of an architectural wilderness. Those long term residents still hanker after the town that was once dominated by the individual independent trader a town that had everything.
From the difficult war years through to the post war 1950's and 60's and onto the 1970's, this rare photographic record charts the changes and reminisces over the once familiar features of the historic market town. With over 200 rare and unseen images of the town from Steve Salter's substantial archive, it is guaranteed that many memories of Old Ashford will be revived.
The book includes clear and informative captions and also recently discovered imagery that has lay undiscovered for years.
