About this Item
STONE, Rufus Barrett. ARTHUR GEORGE OLDMSTED. Son of a Pennsylvania Pioneer; Boy Orator of Ulysses; For the Freedom of the Slave; Defense of the Union; Development of the Northern Tier; Citizen, Jurist, Statesman. Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1919. 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket. First Edition. Signed presentation by Stone on the front endpaper: "Presented to John Ley with the compliments of the author, Bradford, Oct. 22, 1919." While signed copies are fairly common, copies in the original dust jacket are rare. Rufus Barrett Stone was an attorney in Bradford, Pennsylvania. His law offices and residence, the Rufus Barrett Stone House, also called the Flatiron Building, is an historic townhouse that he had built in 1903. John Ley had a machine shop on Corydon Street in Bradford. Olmsted was a unique individual, who took advantage of every opportunity to learn and to improve his own station. His oratory made him a leader for or against causes of the era, including prohibition and slavery. His support of the Free Soil Movement brought him to the front as a leader of the newly-formed Republican Party. Very Good (little wear corners, contents clean & tight; front endpapers are browned, probably from a former newspaper clipping laid in); few small chips (1-inch by 2-inch chip base of front cover that affects two words; 2-inch by 2.5-inch chip base of the unprinted rear cover) d/j. $100.00.
