Richler would leave Montreal for Paris in 1950 seeking to follow in the footsteps of the "Lost Generation" of authors from the 1920's known for living and writing abroad. Richler would return to Montreal in 1952 for two years before settling in London until 1972. While in London, Richler would write his first seven novels, including his most well known novel, "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz". "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" was published in 1959 to highly positive critical acclaim, solidifying Richler as one of the greatest authors of his generation. The novel would see a 1974 film adaptation of the same name which itself won several awards including the Bear Award of the 24th Berlin International Film Festival and the Canadian Film Award for Best Motion Picture. 1393155.
