1st Printing. Signed. 370 pages. Published in 2009. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Philipp Meyer's "American Rust". The concrete, specific truth about the "forgotten" America, long before the paradigm became a national political and cultural obsession. "Set in a beautiful but dying Pennsylvania steel town, 'American Rust' is a novel of the lost American Dream and the desperation that arises from its loss. It is the story of two young men bound to the town by family, responsibility, inertia, and the beauty around them, who dream of a future beyond the factories, abandoned homes, and the polluted river. An extraordinarily moving novel about the bleak realities that battle our desire for transcendence and the power of love and friendship to redeem us" (Publisher's blurb). "Written with considerable dramatic intensity and pace" (Colm Toibin). "Darkly disturbing and richly compelling" (Patricia Cornwell). An absolute "must-have" title for Philipp Meyer collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed ("lined") in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: " 'Isaac's mother was dead five years but he hadn't stopped thinking about her'. Philipp Meyer". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The inscription is the very first line of the book. There is no recipient named. This title is a great novel. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed ("lined") copy of the First Edition/First Printing (British) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The first print run of the British Edition, which is a softcover original only, was much smaller than the American Edition. A rare signed copy thus. "American Rust" is widely regarded as a contemporary American classic. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. Set in a beautiful but economically devastated Pennsylvania steel town, American Rust is a novel of the lost American dream and the desperationas well as the acts of friendship, loyalty, and lovethat arise from its loss. From local bars to trainyards to prison, it is the story of two young men, bound to the town by family, responsibility, inertia, and the beauty around them, who dream of a future beyond the factories and abandoned homes.
Left alone to care for his aging father after his mother commits suicide and his sister escapes to Yale, Isaac English longs for a life beyond his hometown. But when he finally sets out to leave for good, accompanied by his temperamental best friend, former high school football star Billy Poe, they are caught up in a terrible act of violence that changes their lives forever.
Evoking John Steinbecks novels of restless lives during the Great Depression, American Rust takes us into the contemporary American heartland at a moment of profound unrest and uncertainty about the future. It is a dark but lucid vision, a moving novel about the bleak realities that battle our desire for transcendence and the power of love and friendship to redeem us.
