The Butterfly. James M. Cain. New York. Alfred A. Knopf. 1947. 7.5 x 5.25". 165 pp. Inscribed by author to St. Clair McKelway. In fair condition. Dust jacket: scuffed at edges and hinges, tears at head and tail of spine and front hinge but no significant chunks missing. Hardcover boards scuffed at edges and bumped at corners. Spine scuffed at head and tail, lettering rubbed. Dampness stains on front and rear boards. Front and rear hinges cracked. Text-block toned with foxing throughout. Please see photos. James Mallahan Cain (July 1, 1892 October 27, 1977) was an American novelist, journalist and screenwriter. He is widely regarded as a progenitor of the hardboiled school of American crime fiction. His novels The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), Double Indemnity (1936), Serenade (1937), Mildred Pierce (1941) and The Butterfly (1947) brought him critical acclaim and an immense popular readership in America and abroad.
