Please email for Photographs or further information. Very Good - A handsome and appealing contemporary calf-bound copy of these two substantial 1749 Smits biblical works, bound together. Binding with general rubbing, scuffing and surface marking consistent with age, heavier wear to extremities and corners, with small areas of exposed board. Raised spine bands and much of the original gilt decoration remain attractive and distinct; gilt-lettered morocco title label present. Boards remain attached and the text block is sound and firm. Internally generally clean and well preserved, with expected age-toning, occasional light spotting, foxing and minor marks from use. Both title pages present. Two engraved allegorical frontispieces present, one signed J. C. Philips, together with the engraved armorial dedication plate. Extensive prolegomena, biblical text and scholarly commentary present. Marbled endpapers remain attractive. Two old paper inventory labels to the front pastedown. Engraved ex-libris of Franciscus Peri, Franciscan Recollect theologian and contemporary of Smits, providing particularly appropriate eighteenth-century provenance. A pleasing scholarly copy with considerable period character, the external wear reflecting historical use while the binding, text and engraved material remain notably well preserved. PRAEMISSO PROLEGOMENO, ELUCIDATUS A substantial and appealing eighteenth-century biblical volume containing two closely related works from the celebrated Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis Versione Belgica of the Franciscan Recollect scholar Wilhelmus Smits: his editions of the Book of Wisdom (Sapientia) and Ecclesiasticus or Sirach, both printed in 1749 at Antwerp and Amsterdam. Smits's ambitious project combined the Latin Vulgate with a Dutch or Flemish vernacular version and extensive grammatical, literal, philological and critical commentary. Far more than a simple Bible translation, the series formed part of Smits's lifelong programme of Catholic biblical scholarship, drawing upon Hebrew, Greek, patristic and contemporary critical learning. Sapientia and Ecclesiasticus, two of the principal books of biblical wisdom literature, form a particularly coherent pair within the project. Bibliographical records identify Jan Caspar Philips as illustrator of the Sapientia edition. Of particular interest is the engraved eighteenth-century ex-libris of the Franciscan Recollect theologian Franciscus Peri, a contemporary member of the same Provincia Germaniae Inferioris in which Smits himself served. Peri was a senior theological lector and compiler of a history of the Franciscan Recollect province.
