Arguing that the development and effects of the sixteen miles of track which essentially served only the small community of Thomaston, Georgia mirrored the history of the larger railroad/community nexus in the 19th century, the author looks at the financial ups and downs of the small railroad company and it impact on the population of Thomaston. He finds that, contrary to common perceptions of the railroad business, the company operated at a loss for its shareholders, but brought significant development to the town.
