Synopsis
Somerville and Ross wrote many travel books charting their experiences throughout Ireland and abroad. In the Vine Country is an account of a tour through the Medoc county, where they discover the pleasures of harvest - a glass of mout, freshly trodden, and garlic kisses from their hostess. About the Author
Edith Somerville (1858-1949) grew up in County Cork, Ireland. She belonged to the innermost circle of Anglo-Irish society. After a private education at home she studied art in Dusseldorf, Paris and London and began her career as an illustrator. Though, after her meeting with her cousin, Violet Martin, in 1886 and the beginning of their long collaboration, she was best known as a writer. Violet Martin aka Martin Ross (1862-1915) was born in Ross House County Galway, Ireland. She took her pseudonym, 'Ross' from her native place. She was educated first at home and then at Alexandra College, Dublin. She was an ardent suffragist, and was vice-president of the Munster Women's Franchise League. Somerville and Ross lived together for most of their lives at the Somerville home in County Cork. They travelled a great deal together in Europe, and spent many months at a time in Paris. Separately and together, they wrote some thirty books, mainly set in Ireland, as well as many articles.
