Nel 1975 l’autrice, ventenne, si ritrov� a far parte di una spedizione in Africa nel Dahomey, oggi Benin, per girare un documentario sulla cultura africana. Era stato il re Aho Ren� Glel�, erede della monarchia decaduta e capo vodun, a sollecitare l’incontro con Ascanio e Ulisse, uno enologo con la passione per l’etnologia, l’altro uomo di libri e di editoria, uomo eclettico, amante d’arte e di viaggi. Nella lettera il re si diceva disposto a far girare un documentario per mettere il mondo a parte della magia dell’Africa, le virt� del fuoco e quelle dell’acqua, i riti vodun, la divinit�, gli gnomi. Ascanio e Ulisse si innamorarono dell’idea di immergersi in quel mondo e di testimoniarne riti, miti, medicina. Il viaggio doveva durare alcuni mesi, ma Ulisse fin� per restarci due anni. La Rai finanzi� la spedizione e alla fine il documentario intitolato Magia d’Africa fu trasmesso su Rai2.
Questo libro � il racconto di quella straordinaria esperienza, tutti coloro che parteciparono alla spedizione, a partire dalla troupe Rai, rimasero coinvolti e incantati da uomini, paesaggi, riti dell’Africa pi� remota. Nell’esplorazione di quel mondo i tempi si dilatano, gli italiani sono visti con sospetto soprattutto dai nuovi governanti, antiche dinastie lottano tra loro, stregoni e imbroglioni, amori e visioni del passato coloniale francese, tutto si intreccia mentre lo sguardo di Maria Pace Ottieri – autrice e protagonista – combina magistralmente il racconto di viaggio con l’osservazione antropologica.
Quasi vent’anni dopo l’autrice ritorner� in Benin dove tutto sar� diverso, un mondo in trasformazione e quasi corrotto dal turismo. Ma � cambiato soprattutto l’approccio a quella terra.
