About this Item
A large (17"x12") cibachrome print by Hans Hammarskiöld, Utan titel (untitled). Signed on the back by the photographer. Hammarskiöld was born in 1925 in Stockholm. His breakthrough as a professional photographer came in the 1950s when he worked all over the world. In 1955 his work, along with that of his wife Caroline Hebbe, was selected by Edward Steichen for the world-touring Museum of Modern Art exhibition and book "The Family of Man", seen by 9 million visitors. For some years he was employed by the British Vogue. Hammarskiöld was the last surviving member of the group Tio fotografer (Ten Photographers), which formed in 1958 and was influential in Swedish photography for decades as the illustrations agency Tiofoto. Cibachrome (also known as Ilfachrome) is a dye destruction positive-to-positive photographic process used for the reproduction of film transparencies on photographic paper. The prints are made on a stable polyester base as opposed to the traditional paper base. Since it uses 13 layers of azo dyes sealed in a polyester base, the print will not fade, discolor, or deteriorate for an extended time. Accelerated aging tests conducted by Henry Wilhelm rated the process as producing prints which, framed under glass, would last for 29 years before color shifts could be detected. Characteristics of Ilfochrome prints are image clarity, color purity, and being an archival process able to produce critical accuracy to the original transparency. CONDITION: Excellent.
