Item description from seller

Milano, 1988 (October), Bompiani (printed by «Nuovo istituto italiano d’arti grafiche», Bergamo), red publisher’s cloth; titles gilt to spine; blue dustjacket printed in yellow and white (graphics by Carla Moroni); endpapers blank, octavo, pages: 509 [9, of which 4 are the index and 1 is the illustrations index]; numerous illustrations in the text. First edition, first printing. A fine copy (truly minimal browning to leaves, otherwise bearing non specific imperfections to report). Eco’s second novel, published eight years after «The Name of the Rose». A homage to esotericism, «Foucault’s Pendulum» is centred around a young man working in the Milanese publishing industry with frequent forays into the near and distant past; the front dust-jacket-flap states that the novel «takes place from the early 1970s to 1984 in a Milanese publishing house and in a Parisian museum where Foucault’s pendulum is exhibited, with a negligible spell of a few years in Brazil. It takes place from 1943 to 1945 in a small village between Langhe and Monferrato [in Piedmont, North-Western Italy]. It takes place from the second century A.D. to the present day following Hermetic knowledge. It takes place between 1344 and 2000, following the Templars’ and Rosicrucians’ plan to conquer the world. It takes place entirely on the night of 23 June 1984, first in the periscope’s sentry box, then in the sentry box of the Statue of Liberty at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers in Paris. It takes place on the night between 26 and 27 June of the same year, in the old country house that Jacopo Belbo, the protagonist, inherited from his uncle Carlo, while Pim, the protagonist, recounts the events mentioned above».…
