About this Item
4to. Stab-stapled. [32pp. printed on rectos only, including basic title sheet and blank back cover]. 'key hived in a slum dwelling, or to give it the full eggs and trumpet splurch, the sir arthur lithuania bling busby slum estate, containing amongst outside cess, job lots, teetering breasts, clonky gutters, and deathly empory door knockers'. Idiosyncratic prose by Nations, accompanied by three loose carbon typescript sheets by Allen Fisher, continuing the general tone, and beginning: 'at the request of mr. nations i have made the following notes which may be of use to those brave enough to be reading the first part of his document entitled "key custe[r"]' (slightly cut off by the outer margin). It is not clear if anyone had the chance to be brave enough; given the frequent brief holograph corrections and Tippex erasures, one wonders if this copy might have replaced the ribbon typescript, which would suggest that a published version, if there is one, would ideally have needed to use this copy or at least another corrected copy, again if there is one. (Similarly, three lines of Fisher's notes are original typescript, although that in itself does not suggest that this is the primary copy.) While the corrections are undoubtedly by Nations, the underlining of unusual words (of which there are many) is less easy to attribute. Apparently not underlined for correction, they seem less likely to be Nations' emphases than a reader's, therefore probably Fisher's. In any case, the typescript is a rare example of Nations' working methods, which were certain to be interesting. Blank back cover detached, otherwise Very Good, slightly rubbed, the title sheet faintly discoloured to extremities and with a few trivial spots. Contained in a plastic wallet. Nations and Fisher met around 1964 through their shared passion for blues and R&B. Nations was living in Brighton initially, but was soon in London, working at Woolland Brothers in Knightsbridge and moving to Notting Hill. In 'Brushes with Music: With Strokes in 1960s British Rock (1941-1969)', he adds of Fisher: 'I also drew my earliest wall-sized Thelonius [sic] Monk mural on his living room wall.'.
