American actor Walter Hampden (1879-1955) boldly signed this program page for The Light of Asia, in which he played the role of Siddhartha, Prince of the Sakyas. According to the program, Hampden is also credited for staging and directing this performance. Hampden was a major star on Broadway, becoming known for his Shakespearean roles like Hamlet and Macbeth, as well as Cyrano de Bergerac and Danforth in The Crucible. He managed the Colonial Theatre on Broadway which was briefly renamed Hampden s Theatre (1925-1931), during which time this play, The Light of Asia, was produced. Hampden also acted in numerous films including the 1954 comedy Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden. 9 ½ x 6 .
