Very good, fresh, dark and clean. With receipt stamp of the H.N. Swanson Agency. To Edgar Carter: 8523 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood 46 "Dear Ed: Send me a copy of the contract on the original sale of this ("Nightmare"), for my files, will you? I never did get one. Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Cornell." "Nightmare" was filmed as "Fear in the Night" in 1947 and in 1956 as "Nightmare". Both were directed by Maxwell Shane. Woolrich (1903-1968), born George Hopley, December 4, 1903, New York City; died September 25, 1968, New York City; American writer of detective fiction; films and novels include: "The Haunted House" 1928; "Seven Footprints to Satan" 1929; "Children of the Ritz" 1929; "House of Horror" 1929; "The Bride Wore Black" 1940; "Phantom Lady" 1944; "I Married a Dead Man" 1948; "Dead Man Blues" 1948; "Eyes That Watch You" 1952; "Nightmare" 1956. Swanson (1900-1991), one of the nation's most famous literary agents; known in the industry as "Swanie"; wrote and produced a handful of films after David O. Selznick saw his work in College Humor; he opened an office on Sunset Boulevard in 1934, and at one time his clients included Raymond Chandler, William Faulkner, James M. Cain, Ayn Rand, Cornell Woolrich, Budd Schulberg, S.J. Perelman, John O'Hara and Elmore Leonard; some of the scripts Swanson sold included "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "The Big Sleep," "Old Yeller," "Butterfield 8" and "The Mosquito Coast". No Binding. Condition: Very Good. ("Cornell") in black fountain pen ink on printed Hotel Marseilles, Broadway at 103rd Street, New York letterhead, September 11, 1940. 9" x 5 15/16"; 1 page. Fine, fresh, dark and clean. A fine letter to his agent, H.N. Swanson regarding the filming of his book "The Bride Wore Black" 1940. With Swanson's note at the top reading "Tell me where it's been" and with a secretary's response below: "Rej[ected]: Paramount, Fox, Columbia, RKO, now at Warner Bros. (9-16-40). We have only 1 manuscript." This was Woolrich's first mystery/suspense novel. It did not reach the screen until it was filmed by Francois Truffaut in 1967, starring Jeanne Moreau. Letters and or books signed by Woolrich are rare. There is a signed first edition of this 1940 book now on the Internet priced at $7,500.00. To H.N. Swanson 8523 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood, Calif. "Dear Swanie: I'm afraid it looks as though there's no chance for THE BRIDE WORE BLACK or I would have heard from you by now. Could you get the copy you have back to me? Fine, fresh, dark and clean. To H.N. Swanson 8523 Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood, Calif. The great noir novelist Woolrich writes his Hollywood agent H.N. Swanson a letter dripping with paranoia, believing his publisher, Lippincott, has made a sale of the movie rights to "Deadline at Dawn" without telling him (or paying him). In part: ".You ask me in your telegram what the situation is. I will give it to you exactly. There seems to be a conspiracy of silence on the part of Lippincott and your friend Wing concerning this sale. I went down there immediately after receipt of your first wire. I tested them by refraining from mentioning the subject for the first ten minutes of the interview. They did not mention it either. I finally had to. There reply was that all they knew about was that they had seen it in the New York papers.They are being evasive, they refuse to admit there has been a sale. I do not know what to do about this".
