One of these is a reproduction of Birch?s oil painting of Piha beach, which was purchased by the MacKelvie Trust, and another is a cartoon (by J.C.H) depicting a number of paintings of scenes in the rain ? a commentary on Auckland?s weather at the time. Birch (1869-1955) was an English landscape painter who came to New Zealand in November 1936 for a painting tour in preparation for the 1937 Royal Academy Exhibition. ?Pyes Camp? was a camp established by an Irish fisherman Alan Pye, in 1924, now the site of the luxury Huka Lodge.
