Signature "Rauparaha Penetana" on paper slip 12.5 x 3 cm. Rauparaha (c1768-1849) was formerly known as Penetana. He was the great chief of the Ng?ti Toa active in the musket wars and the Wairau affray, and in selling land to the NZ Company in the Nelson area. He continued an extensive campaign of fighting and incursions amongst iwi and against pakeha, until captured by Grey?s forces, who later released him to his people in Otaki where he died.Very rare signature.
