Here, Marat elaborates on the ideas of Montesquieu, Rousseau and Beccaria, advancing a program of penal and criminal justice reform in France. Beginning his career as a physician and scientist, Marat would later emerge as one of the leaders of radical Montagnards during the French Revolution - calling for popular violence and advocating for dictatorship.
