About this Item
An Original Hand Written Letter and Signed by Biologist St. George Jackson Mivart. Dated 1894. A note about a meeting at the Zoological Gardens. St. George Jackson Mivart 1827-1900 was an English biologist. He is famous for starting as an ardent believer in natural selection who later became one of its fiercest critics. Mivart attempted to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with the beliefs of the Catholic Church, and finished by being condemned by both. His opposition to the central role of natural selection, his idea that the soul is created by God, and that evolutionism is not unattainable with the idea of God, brought him in contrast with other evolutionist scientists. His theological theories on hell and on the compatibility between science and Catholicism led him to clash with the Catholic Church but importantly, ". the cause of Mivart?s problems was not his advocacy of evolutionism. Size is 112m x 95mm. Condition is good. Folding crease. More images can be taken upon request. Ref17349. Seller Inventory # 025773
