(ca 1899); 15 x 19 3/4; engraving, with spaces to be filled in manuscript (unused); a few creases to margins and two minor spots to verso; in very good condition.A beautiful, elaborate, early membership certificate, it was produced by Tiffany & Co. and featured stylized images of each of the original thirteen colonies and women on a shore, gazing at a ship in the distance. When issued to a member, it would also be affixed with the seals of the National and State Societies imprinted on wax disks and the signatures of the state and national presidents and secretaries. Founded in 1891, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America was composed of women, descendents of ancestors, "who came to reside in an American Colony before 1776, and whose services were rendered during the Colonial Period." Still in existence today with more than 15 000 members, the society promotes "appreciation for the people, places and events that led to the formation and development of our country.".
