The first is a typescript titled A Laboratory Notebook of Selected Physiological Techniques as Studied in Physiology 201, 1953-1954 by James T. Gourzis, Department of Physiology, U.C.L.A. School of Medicine. Housed in a brown clasp folder; [78 ] pp; charts and illustrations; measures 8.5 x 11 inches. The second is titled Studies on the Role of Adrenergic Vasoconstriction in the Development of Shock, James T. Gourzis? thesis submitted in April, 1962 to The University of Manitoba in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Housed in an aqua clasp folder, bearing the imprint of the University of Manitoba, with the title pasted down on the front cover; [8], 178 pp; graphs and illustrations; very specific table of contents; measures 8.5 x 11 inches. A loose copy of the 2-page thesis abstract, included in the manuscript, also was included in the folder. Both manuscripts are in VG+ condition; some toning to pages. [23-76] James T. Gourzis was born in 1928 in Cambridge, MA. He received an undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard; his Master?s degree in pharmacology from Boston University; and his MD / PhD in pharmacology / medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1963. Walker?s Research 2009 profile of Dr. Gourzis listed him as being on the board of directors of Pro Pharmaceuticals Inc in Massachusetts since 2006. ?Dr. Gourzis has extensive experience in formulating scientific and regulatory strategy and heading clinical development teams for pharmaceutical and biotechnology products, small molecules and biologics. Therapeutic area experience incudes oncology, cardiovascular, virology, immunology, central nervous system, allergy, anti-inflammatory, infectious disease, pain management and gastrointestinal disease. His final home city was Portland, Oregon, where, since 2002 he was a principal in MEDRAND Associates. He worked in clinical pharmacology, specializing in developing and testing new pharmaceutical products with specific focus on the correlation between drugs and diseases. Dr. Gourzis recently passed away and these two typed manuscripts were directly acquired from his widow. The Laboratory Notebook contains four sections, complete with charts, drawings and a fold-out graph: A) The Van Slyke-Neill Manometric Technique; B) The Scholander Gas Analyzer; C) Respirator Measurements, including 1. Respiratory Metabolism ? the Respiratory Quotient, 2. Basal Metabolism, and 3. Functional Residual Air; D) The Warburg Constant Volume Respirometer. The first paragraph of the PhD thesis abstract states, ?The major purpose of the present studies was to assess more completely the role of vasoconstriction and of reduced effective regional blood flow in the genesis of shock.? Gourzis concludes the abstract by writing, ?Thus, a major component of the protection provided by phenoxybenzamine may be prevention of the deleterious redistribution of intra-organ blood flow during shock, permitting more effective nutrition of compromised tissues.?.
