This 1932 first edition of Thomas J. Keane s Lubbers Afloat is inscribed by Keane to Dan Beard: Presented to Daniel Carter Beard Esq. National Scout Commissioner Boy Scout of America as a small token of my profound admiration for what he has done for American virility . Beneath the inscription, Dan Beard added an inscription of his own: July 10th 1933 Read and passed on Mobie Dick Wheeler Uncle Dan . Thomas J. Keane was a U.S. Naval Officer and author who served as the first National Director of Sea Scouting of the Boy Scouts of America. He revitalized the Sea Scouting program in the mid-1920s. Daniel Beard was an American illustrator, author, and social reformer who founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. He served for 30 years as one of the first National Scout Commissioners of the Boy Scouts and is credited, alongside Ernest Thompson Seton, with building the basis for the Traditional Scouting movement. Blue cloth with white lettering over boards, 242 pages, illustrations by Frank Rigney. 7 ½ x 5 ½ . Condition: Corners and spine ends bumped with some wear, top edge of text block soiled, a few stains on fore-edge of text block which barely affects text pages, couple of spots of soil on last page of text in blank margin; in a color illustrated dust jacket that is chipped at corners and spine ends with good sized pieces missing at both spine ends, many small tears repaired with archival tape, back of jacket soiled; now preserved in a Brodart jacket.
