About this Item
This bookmark is c. a century old. On sturdy paper, in acid free mylar envelope. 100 x 65 mm. R Mazin & Co of 141 Whitechapel Road. Mazin's, selling books, music and all other Jewish related items, was a long-standing feature of the Jewish East End. Raphael Mazin first opened a book shop in 1899 at 100 Old Montague Street, moved to 59 Old Montague Street in 1903 and 65 Old Montague Street in 1905. At the time of the 1901 census he is recorded as age 37 and born in Russia. He was living above the shop with wife Fanny and 7 children. Fanny and the four oldest children (aged 16 to 7) were also born in Russia but the three youngest (ages 5 to 1) were born in London. This indicates the family emigrated to England around 1895. As R Mazin & Co Ltd they moved to 141 Whitechapel Road in 1909, later (c1925) expanding to take over the adjoining premises 139. The final move was to 105 Whitechapel Road in 1940 where they remained until closure in 1970. Seller Inventory # 008695
