[Paris], July 29, 1896. 4pp. Two holes in upper part of letter with loss of portions of several words, but the text is not difficult to decipher, some damp-staining. Stanton begins with, "M. Clemenceau is not satisfied with your reply to his letter." The letter goes on to list Clemenceau's stipulations for publication, and encourages Rideing to "please be clear & so word the letter that he [Clemenceau] can see it," Stanton does not wish to "get in any embarrassing position with him." The article in question was probably "The French Navy" which did appear in the North American Review in 1897. Stanton, son of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and William Brewster Stanton, was a journalist and longtime resident of Paris. He also frequently acted as a freelance literary agent.
