About this Item
About this item: Rare signed letter by French (Alsace) physician and Noble Laureate Albert Schweitzer. The main part of the letter was written and SIGNED by Ali Silver, one of Schweitzer s Dutch nurses. Photos of her and Schweitzer can be found on-line. The last paragraph was written and SIGNED by Emma Hausknecht, who supervised nurses from the early days. In between is a greeting and one sentence WRITTEN AND SIGNED by Albert Schweitzer. It is in French and reads "Chere Miss Basing, Je vous remercie de couer de votre bonte pour mon hospital. Votre devoue. Albert Schweitzer" The translation is "Dear Miss Basing, I thank you from my heart for your kindness for my hospital. Your devoted Albert Schweitzer" The Miss Helene Saisselin Basing to whom the letter is addressed was my grandaunt, the sister of my grandfather. The letter was sent from Lambarene in French Equatorial Africa and is dated February 4, 1956. It was later given to me by Miss Basing in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Schweitzer was a theologian, organist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life." He founded the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, which up to 1958 was situated in French Equatorial Africa. Condition: Very good. 8 1/8" x 10 5/8". On very thin writing paper. Many folds. One 1/8" tear along one fold. A beautiful, historic piece concerning Albert Schweitzer. Seller Inventory # 9004
