Item description from seller

Juliá, Raúl. Signed agreement, 1980, documents the Puerto Rican actor's professional relationship with Zoetrope Studios during a formative period in his American stage and screen career. Executed while Juliá was appearing as Jerry in the original Broadway production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal, which ran from January 5 through May 31, 1980, the document predates the film performances for which he later became widely recognized and supports research into Latino representation, performers' labor, and the contractual administration of film production. Juliá had already established a substantial Broadway presence through productions including Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Threepenny Opera, The Cherry Orchard, and Dracula. Juliá, Raúl. April 1, 1980. One-page document signed; dimensions not supplied. The agreement records Juliá's acknowledgment that he was familiar with the terms of an arrangement involving Zoetrope Studios as the "Borrower" and Context, Unlimited, Inc. It further states that he waived "any claim against Borrower for wages, salary or other compensation," language documenting the allocation of financial responsibility among performer, intermediary, and production company. Juliá signs boldly in black ink, "Raul Julia." The surviving document thus preserves direct evidence of the contractual conditions underlying his professional work rather than publicity material created for a general audience. Dated during Juliá's transition from sustained Broadway prominence toward a broader film career, the agreement provides a concise record of the business arrangements surrounding a Puerto Rican performer working within the American entertainment industry. His later screen roles included Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Addams Family, but this earlier document is particularly useful for tracing the less visible contractual structures that accompanied his artistic career. Two binder holes and one staple hole, with a small tear at one corner; otherwise clean and boldly signed, overall very good. A substantive professional document connecting Juliá to Zoetrope Studios at an important stage in his development as an internationally recognized actor.…
