About this Item
In this bold letter, John Asser reminds A.M. Purcell, the Editor of the The Royal Gazette, of his position in Parliament to take steps to prevent the beauty of the Island being marred. He appeals to Purcell for help to try and stop unsightly erections as the Bermudian . . . a very high hotel on the Pont Pleasant site and if we don t botch it we shall see what is a very attractive spot disfigured forever. If the rest of the island is unconcerned about such things surely Pembroke [parish] and the corporation might insist on some protection against eyesores being provided. He jests about a women s petition: I expect Miss Helen (Meer?) could do something by engineering a monster petition from the women! , adding Don t bother to answer this. The letter is signed Yours Sincerely, JAsser Written on two sides of a 7 x 9 sheet of ivory laid paper imprinted: Government House, Bermuda . General Sir Joseph John Asser (1867-1949), a British Army officer, served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda from 1922 to 1927. While in service, he received the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath as well as several other accolades. A.M. Purcell, the Editor of The Royal Gazette and Colonist is the most likely recipient of this letter. He was known to poke fun at everybody including himself, and everyone took him seriously but himself. He came to be called Bermuda s Samuel Pepys. Condition: Fold lines, a few errant spots, generally very good. Seller Inventory # A01075
