German-American mathematician and electrical engineer Charles Steinmetz (1865-1923) made this $27.13 check out to J. T. Lyon on December 6th, 1905. Steinmetz revolutionized the electric power industry in the United States with his work in developing alternating current and his ground-breaking discoveries in the understanding of hysteresis. He held over 200 patents at the time of his death and earned the monikers Forger of Thunderbolts and The Wizard of Schenectady . Steinmetz was a professor at Union College in Schenectady, NY. The check is drawn on The Schenectady Trust Company and measures 2 3/4 x 7 .
