The second United States Secretary of War, Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) penned and signed this brief note certifying that since a Dr. Samuel McCullough "was stationed at Carlisle [PA] in the hospital department. he drew no rations, and consequently. he is entitled to subsistence." There is another note above Pickering's, signed by Samuel Postlethwaite (1739-1810), a politician who served as a Pennsylvania State Senator (1794-1801). Pickering held numerous prestigious positions in American politics, including Postmaster General (1791-1795), U.S. Secretary of War (1795), and U.S. Secretary of State (1795-1800). He is remembered for his strong association with the Federalist Party and his support of British causes. Paper measures: 4 1/4" x 7 3/4" and is framed with a portrait engraving of Pickering to 11" x 19 3/4". Condition: Has a few spots of soil and fold lines, overall in good condition with a bold, clear signature (it has been examined out of the frame and is not laid down). Seller Inventory # A01201
