Professor at Pont-à-Mousson, Steewech dedicated the work to Charles of Lorraine. It is illustrated by 51 woodcuts in the text (battlefields, war machines.) and a folding table. Vegetus Renatus Flavius or Vegetius, Roman military writer, lived in the second half of the 4th century under Valentinian II (375-392). An official of the Empire, little is known of his personal history. We have a treatise on the military art in five books. The first, treats of the recruits and the recruitment; the second, of the organization of the Legion and the old Roman armies; the third, of the operations of an army in campaign; the fourth, the attack and the defense of the strong places; the fifth, is devoted to the naval tactics. Vegetus Renatus Flavius ou Végèce, écrivain militaire romain, vivait dans la seconde moitié du IVè siècle sous Valentinien II (375-392). Fonctionnaire de l'Empire, on connaît peu de choses de son histoire personnelle. Il nous reste de lui un traité de l'art militaire en cinq livres. Le premier, traite des recrues et du recrutement; le second, de l'organisation de la Légion et des anciennes armées romaines; le troisième, des opérations d'une armée en campagne; le quatrième, l'attaque et la défense des places fortes; le cinquième, est consacré à la tactique navale.
