A very attractive early wash coloured map of the British Isles engraved by Richard William Seale (fl.1732-75) for the 'Universal Magazine' in 1761. The very first issue contained a map of Berkshire engraved by Thomas Kitchin. The issue for August 1761 contained this general map of the British Isles and a note stating that it is 'to illustrate and render more complete the British Atlas we have hitherto been giving to the Public'. An announcement in June 1764 stated the series was finished. Most maps issued were in black and white, but a handful including this one, were issued in very attractive wash colour. With a very ornate title cartouche and extensive rhumb lines. Provenance: Doreen Green 2002; private English collection. Chubb (1927) 188; Hodson (1984-97) 253; Jolly (1990-91) I UNIV 102; Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).…
