Unrecorded Amsterdam Edition with A Unique (?) Allegorical Frontispiece This is an extremely rare (unrecorded) edition of this popular four-part world atlas by Nicolas Sanson, published by Arnout van Ravestein in Amsterd. Quarto. Contemporary calf, leather spine label, raised bands. Spine ends chipped. Corners worn. Some separation along joints/hinges, but covers holding solidly by cords. [6],30,[1]; 102,[4]; 98; 82,[1] pages plus 73 double-page maps engraved by Antoine de Winter. Engraved allegorical frontispiece. Letterpress title printed in red and black. Tiny library blindstamp on title page and ink accession number of verso. Small ink stamp and accession number of verso of each map. Old staining to upper gutter marginal area of title page, preliminary leaves, and first couple of maps. Else quite nice internally. Unrecorded Amsterdam Edition with A Unique (?) Allegorical Frontispiece This is an extremely rare (unrecorded) edition of this popular four-part world atlas by Nicolas Sanson, published by Arnout van Ravestein in Amsterdam in 1699. First issued in the 1650s in Paris, this work is perhaps the single most enduring and widely published world atlas of the second half of the 17th Century. Pastoureau only mentions a Dutch version of Sanson's atlas, first published in Utrecht by Johannes Ribbius (1683) and later by Fran ois Halma in Amsterdam (1700, with a 1708 reissue). A German version was published by Johann Zunner in Frankfurt in 1679. Koeman also notes a 1692 edition by Johannes Luyts. For these editions, Antoine de Winter re-engraved the copper plates. This 1699 edition is unrecorded. European Americana lists only the 1700 edition published by Halma. Koeman lists 74 maps for the Halma edition of 1700 (1709); however, the map of "Le Marquisat et l' lectorat de Brandenbourg" appears to have been added later, as it is not included in this example and is not called for in the index. The present example also includes an allegorical frontispiece, with the publisher's name (Chez Arnout Van Ravesteyn), which is not present in the two examples which appeared at auction in 2018 and 1894 (see below). This finely detailed allegorical frontispiece, clearly engraved especially for this 1699 edition published by Arnout van Ravestein, personifies the arts and sciences that underpin geographic knowledge. At the center, a female figure, likely representing Geography, gestures toward the heavens while wielding a celestial globe as she instructs a group of figures including a female crowned monarch, a wing-headed female figure representing Fame (symbolizing the spread of exploration and the fame of geographic discovery), and Neptune (representing navigation and maritime power, and overseas exploration). The figures consult a map spread across the table, emphasizing the cooperation of power, exploration, and learning. Above, a putto bearing a torch parts the heavens, revealing a starry firmament and monumental architectural ruins, alluding to both the divine inspiration and the ancient foundations of geographic inquiry. The title and publication details are elegantly integrated below the image. The atlas includes 73 double-page maps and an engraved title page. The contents are organized by continent: Europe: (30 maps) Asia: (20 maps) Africa: (18 maps) America: (15 maps) Each map measures approximately 190 x 250 mm. Among the highlights are fine maps of the Philippines, California (depicted as an island), Florida (including the Gulf Coast and parts of Texas), Mexico, Japan, and other significant regions. Rarity The book is very rare. Not listed in OCLC, Phillips or Pastereau. This edition not in Alden, European Americana. RBH lists 2 examples offered in the p.

Right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Information regarding the right of withdrawal

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Barry Lawrence Ruderman, La Jolla, California, U.S.A., +1 858-551-8500, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Shipping terms

We ship packages worldwide, using Federal Express, DHL, UPS and the US Postal Service (USPS). Orders received during before 3 p.m. Pacific Time on days when the gallery is open are typically shipped the same day. All other orders are typically shipped the next business day. When you order an item, you will receive an auto-generated confirmation email, confirming that your order has been processed by our email server. We will follow up with written confirmation that your order is in stock and has been shipped. Feel free to email or phone us if you have other questions.

While we make our best efforts to insure timely delivery of your packages, even the best courier services do not have perfect track records. Holidays and inclement weather can result in unforeseen delays. If you are purchasing an item for a gift or you otherwise have a specific deadline, please specify this information on your order form and use a shipping method that allows a safe time cushion for receipt of your order.

We have several shipping methods, depending upon the item. Maps are typically shipped either flat (encapsulated in Mylar and bound between multiple sheets of packing boards) or in custom thick core packing tubes. If you have a preference, please feel free to include this information when processing your order.

Shipping Insurance will be added to all items over $200.00. Insurance is typically billed at $0.05 per $100.00 (e.g., insurance for a $1000.00 map would be $5.00).
