Engraved folding MAP OF THE WORLD composed of 12 GLOBE GORES (11 � x 15 � inches) from the 5th volume ("Geographica Artificialis") of Scherer's "Atlas Novus Exhibens Orbem Terraqueum Per Naturae Opera." "There are two world maps in Part V" (SHIRLEY), the present one having been prepared in Munich in 1700 (see subsidiary cartouche). The Jesuit Heinrich Scherer was a professor of Hebrew, Mathematics, and Ethics at the University of Dillingen before being appointed Tutor to the Royal Princess of Mantua and Bavaria. During this time he started work on the "Atlas Novus" which puts special emphasis on the Catholic hierarchy and the Jesuit missions throughout the world. Seller Inventory # 6BD0057
