Original colour-printed map (61 x 99 cm) of the two Boer Republics, Transvaal and the Orange Free State (present day northern South Africa, southern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana), with inset maps of Johannesburg, Ladysmith, Dundee, South Africa, Pretoria, and Kimberley. Dissected into 27 sections and backed into linen, folding between publisher's original red cloth covers lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Old presentation inscription dated Dec. 25, 1907 to verso. Light offsetting to lower right panel, some dampstaining to cloth not affecting map, generally a very good, clean example. The map shows the northern theatre of the Second Boer War fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics over the Empire's influence in South Africa from 1899 to 1902, and was produced while the conflict was still ongoing. The firm of Wood & Ortlepp were a surveying and mapmaking firm based in Cape Town and specialising in regional maps of South Africa. In 1899 they formed an agreement with the Field Intelligence Department to produce a detailed map other Transvaal and Orange Free State entitled the "Imperial Map of South Africa", first published as a thirty-one sheet map in 1900.
