About this Item
SOIL MAP. NEBRASKA. US DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE. 1914. TITLE: Soil Map. Nebraska. Thurston County Sheet. PUBLICATION DETAILS: Upper left: U. S. Depart. of Agriculture. Bureau of Soils. Lower right: Field Operations. Bureau of Soils. 1914. Imprint: A. Hoen & Co. Lith. Baltimore, Md. 19 inches high by 31 inches wide. Legends outside right and left neat lines. GEOGRAPHY: With a scale of 1 inch equals 1 mile considerable detail is shown. Thurston County is located in northeastern Nebraska along the Missouri River and about 20 miles north of Omaha. The Village of Walthill is located near the center of the map. In the late 1800s and early 1900s thousands of acres of fertile prairieland were passing into cultivation and there was a need for an outlet for products, as well as a home-market for the purchase of daily necessities. Walthill was platted in 1906 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Walter "Walt" Hill, son of railroad executive James J. Hill. NATIVE AMERICANS: Walthill is near the center of the Omaha Indian Reservation which encompasses more than half of Thurston County. According to the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Walthill was 80.9% Native American, 15.6% White and 3.5% other races. The village of Winnebago, located eight miles north (on the Winnebago Indian Reservation), was established at the same time as Walthill. Both have populations less than 1,000. There are approximately 326 federally recognized Indian Reservations in the United States with a total population of 1,043,762. CONDITION: Folded. Very good condition. Original color.
