Text in two columns. 17 engraved maps - double-page maps of Rutlandshire, Shropshire, Somersetshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire, Westmoreland, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, North Riding of Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, and West Riding of Yorkshire, eight of which with vignette view / Walker's map of South Wales in six (2 rows of 3) segments folding out to 48x38.5cm / untitled map of South East Wales including parts of Glamorganshire, Brecknockshire & Radnorshire in six (2 rows of 3) segments folding out to 48x37cm / Walker's map of North Wales including Anglesey and part of Caernarvonshire in six (2 rows of 3) segments folding out to 48x38cm. One engraved view - Windsor Castle from the West. Edges of text-block red-speckled. Outer edges of title-page and margins of text pages faintly toned, a few leaves lightly & sparsely spotted. Margins of double-page maps and view with variable faint toning and/or light & sparse spotting. A little worm damage at top of centre-fold of map of Shropshire well above map border, and in upper margin of preceding leaf of text. Maps of Staffordshire and Suffolk a little toned along centre-folds. Map of South Wales all but perished, being detached, torn in two through all three upper segments, with loss to upper part of fore-edge margin, and with a number of untidy creases and misfolds. Map of SE Wales with jagged closed tear from inner edge of length about 15cm (from which two short closed tear offshoots), extending about 12cm into map and affecting both inner segments and upper middle segment / burn-hole of diameter up to 1cm, with singed circumference, at upper edge well above map border and plate-mark / two neat misfolds parallel to correct folds between upper & lower edges, resulting in toned and slightly nicked narrow strip of fore-edge protruding from text-block, though well outside of map border and plate-mark. Map of North Wales with closed tear of length 2.5cm confined to inner margin, and single neat misfold close & parallel to correct fold between upper & lower edges, resulting in toned, creased and slightly nicked strip of fore-edge protruding from text-block, though outside of map border and plate-mark. Top edge of text-block toned, other edges lightly so. Contemporary half calf. Spine with five lightly raised bands and gilt title and volume number etc on two red leather labels. Marbled paper-covered boards. Original endpapers, small 19th-century engraved bookplate on front pastedown. Spine lightly rubbed and a little marked, labels slightly chipped. Boards lightly rubbed. Endpapers a little adhesive-stained at corners. Front endpapers split along hinge, hinge partly broken and a little slack; pastedown dust-soiled, flyleaf lightly so. Rear endpapers a little dusty along hinge. Binding still holding firmly and of pleasing shelf appearance. Text clean and tight; view in very good condition; maps - kaput (South Wales), fair (SE Wales), good+ (North Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk), and very good (all 11 others). GOOD+ copy.
