WEST LAMBETHPublished London circa 1890 by Edward StanfordA highly detailed very large format folding map of West Lambeth and adjacent areas of London. This is an original late Victorian map not to be confused with the numerous modern reprints.Although the map is undated, Stanford's address printed in the lower margin is 26-7 Cockspur Street, Charing Cross which is the address occupied by the Stanford Geographical Establishment from 1884 to 1901.The level of detail afforded by the huge 6" to a mile scale enables individual houses to be shown. This can be appreciated from the close up images provided. Covers from Knightsbridge and Mayfair in the north to Tooting and Norwood in the south. This includes Chelsea, Westminster, Battersea, Clapham, Balham, Fulham, Stockwell, Putney, Norwood, Wimbledon, Herne Hill etc. This is one of a series of maps commissioned by the London School Board which was set up to ensure all children aged 5-13 attended school. The map identifies existing and proposed schools marked in red over the base map which is Stanford's definitive "Library Map of London and its Suburbs".A fascinating record of London as it was over 120 years ago before the ravages of war and the march of modern development. The robust linen backing has preserved the map in excellent condition with little sign of wear other than insignificant age related blemishes. The title sticker on the cover is however mostly lost. Free of repairs or restoration. Approx. 50" x 42" (1,270mm x 1,070mm) folding into marbled covers approx.10.5" x 7"(270mm x 180mm)TD926W.…
