The importance of this map has long been overlooked. While it is an offshoot of the Government sources as stated, this is in fact important in the history of transportation. It is official recognition of the Lincoln Highway. Because of it having a separate designation in the legend, it brings to the forefront the concept of transcontinental travel. It also give a green light to new associations looking to acquire name recognition for their created highway. The public in general received a recent shot in the arm for travel with Ford's lowering of prices on his mass produced automobile for the masses. With the winds of war whirling in Europe, the internally focused travel public enthusiastically received this map as evidenced by its lack of rarity. The overall effect was to have the Lincoln highway the most prominent feature on this map. Because the good roads movement was getting the federal government and other local governments into road improvements, the stage was set for a shift in public consciousness. This map contributed to that shift toward an automobile culture. As such it was a most important contribution to the promotion of the named highway movement. Standing on its own, this map was a critical tool in the shift away from the use of railroads. This map brings a foothold into the use of highways for more travel and convenience. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, it stands alone for its cartographic importance in the changing cultural identity of the population of the United States.
