Item description from seller

480 x 330 mm., modern outline colour, tear in lower left corner repaired, otherwise in good condition. A good large scale chart of the east end of Java and the western part of Bali. An inset lower left features a 'Plan de la Baye de Ballambouang'. The material collected for 'Le Neptune Oriental' was approved by the French Compagnie des Indes. D'Apres de Mannevillette was one of the first Hydrographers of France and an accomplished navigator. Born in Le Havre to a captain in the French West India Company he made a voyage to the Caribbean in 1726. He showed an early interest in navigation and was one of the first Frenchmen to use Hadley's quadrant and was later in life a friend of Dalrymple. Upon the atlas' publication it was highly commended by everyone. Updated at various times after initial publication in 1745 it was expanded considerably in 1775 when this chart was introduced. NMM 204 no. 55; Shirley M.Apr 1c.

Store description

Founded by the late Clive A. Burden in 1966, the company is one of the longest established dealers in antique maps, atlases, books and rare decorative prints. All items offered are fine original examples. Areas of particular focus are the British Isles and North America. Our stock dates from incunabula (pre-1500) to the late 1800s. We also carry decorative prints including botanical, bird, other natural history, architecture, in addition to Vanity Fair caricatures. Books include atlases, illustrated, and colour plate works. Philip D. Burden joined his father in the business in 1979. His interests included the British Isles and North America. He wrote and published in 1996 and 2007 the definitive two volume treatise entitled ‘The Mapping of North America’. This was the first work to list all known printed maps relating to North America up to the year 1700. Each fully described and illustrated. Clive A.
