Item description from seller

Sheet 56x82cm containing a colour city plan image size 42x46cm, titled and labelled in French with English title to the top, and brief texts below. Very good, folded with some spotting and a couple of short closed tears. Very rare, with Worldcat locating only 1 copy (OCLC 947926804: Library of Congress). Prepared by N. (Noubar) Partamian for the Direction des Antiquites, Syrie Nord, in June 1954, and printed by Ecole G. Salem, Aleppo, this dates shortly after the coup that overthrew President Colonel Adib ash-Shishakli. On a scale of approx 1:20,000, it shows the ancient city with its dense complex of streets and alleys around the Citadel. This is surrounded by a patchwork of modern grid patterned suburbs (Village de Belleramoun, Quarter Achrafieh, Quartier Terbet Lala, Quartier Ansari etc), and areas of cultivated land. Details include named quarters, ancient monuments, public buildings, asphalt roads, roads under construction, cultivated land etc. The text sells Aleppo as "The most ancient City in the World", promoting its monuments (especially the Citadel, Omayyad Mosque, walls, gates), industry (traditional handicrafts, modern textiles), schools (54,000 students in 28 secondary schools, 66 elementary, 7 professional, 92 private), commerce (the greatest land route for trade pre-Suez), and agriculture (referencing traditional crops and modern methods).
