About this Item
This is a beautiful map of Illinois on a small scale. It was done after Putnam County was formed in 1825. The appearance of an unnamed county has also happened. Finley produced map using classic techniques. Thie map was printed using black ink on off white paper. The image was hand colored at the time of publication. Illinois was first settled in a riverine configuration. The Ohio and Mississippi were principal purveyors of migrant populations looking to acquire land. They fed into the Illinois River which provided people were central location settlement. At the time of this publication, Chicago was a nascent settlement of traders and store keepers. People would travel from up to a couple of hindered miles to access the Great Lakes trading system. The rivers of Illinois fed the trading complex at New Orleans until the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848. This map reflects the riverine aspects of Illinois' settlement. It is a superb artifact of the early 19th centuries. mapmakers art. Very good with a smudge top center not into the plate mark. Very nice map. Seller Inventory # 410
