¶ Plate representing Demonte, a very rare bird's-eye plan dated 1666, from the Theatrum Statuum Regiae Celsitudinis Sabaudiae Ducis, Pedemontii Principis?better known as Theatrum Sabaudiae?a grand atlas devoted to Savoy and Piedmont, initiated in the 1660s by Carlo Emanuele II, Duke of Savoy (1634-1675). This engraved view of 61 x 46 cm represents with great fineness the town of Demonte, located on the Stura di Demonte, near the Franco-Italian border. One can distinguish houses, gardens, churches, and especially the fortress dominating the city, making it a particularly sought-after document of urbanism and defense. The interest of this map also lies in its production history. The original drawing was executed by Giovenale Boetto (1604-1678), Italian military architect, then engraved in Amsterdam, probably by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). Although conceived in the 1660s, the work was only published after the death of Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) and Carlo Emanuele II, Duke of Savoy (1634-1675), in 1682, by the Blaeu heirs. This chronology reinforces the bibliophilic interest of the print, which belongs to the great golden age of Dutch cartography. Materially, the copy is on strong laid paper, with central fold and stub trace on verso, indices of atlas extraction. Its large format, fine legibility, and border subject make it an attractive piece for lovers of antique maps, Piedmont, Savoy, military cartography, and 17th-century urban views. Generally good condition, defects minor.
