Original colour-printed map of Qatar (106 x 66 cm). This is a scarce, large-format bilingual wall map of Qatar, produced in 1990 by Clyde Surveys and Qatar's Ministry of Industry and Public Works. It was produced at a time when the country was in the early stages of development of its natural gas industry, which has since become world-leading. Utilizing advanced surveying techniques, including satellite imagery, this map provides an elegant overview of the terrain, topography, and infrastructure of Qatar. As indicated in the legend at bottom-right, roads and tracks of various qualities, waterways (including wadi, mostly dry riverbed and seasonal waterways. and sabkha, coastal mud and salt flats), areas of cultivation, and structures. Cities, such as Doha, nearby Wakrah, and al Khor, are easily identifiable, reflecting the concentration of the country's population along its east coast and especially in Doha. Conversely, Dukhan (at left has historically had a small population but is immensely important for Qatar's economy as the Dukhan Field was the first oilfield discovered in Qatar, in the late 1940s, and remains its most productive field today. At the time of this map's production, Qatar had already been transformed into a high-income country thanks to the discovery and exploitation of petroleum resources. But Qatar's subsequent propulsion to become one the wealthiest country on earth was driven by the development of its natural gas industry. More specifically, the vast North Field (known as South Pars in Iran, which shares control of it with Qatar) in the Persian Gulf, by far the world's largest natural gas field, was developed in the years directly preceding and succeeding this map's production. First discovered in 1971, the full size and scope of the field was not realized until subsequent investigations confirmed its importance. Still, at the time the international market for natural gas was limited, yet the government. through its state-run petroleum company, made a smart bet that the resource would be valuable in the future, and invested heavily in infrastructure for natural gas throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. The result is that today Qatar, despite its small size, it one of the top exporters of natural gas and specifically liquified natural gas in the world, challenging relatively massive countries like the U.S.A. and Australia. Publication History and Census This map was prepared in 1990 by Clyde Surveys (successor to Fairey Surveys) under the direction of the Geographic Information Systems Division of Qatar's Ministry of Industry and Public Works. It is very scarce; we only note an example at the Library of Congress but no other institutional examples or market history.…
