This is a very nice map of Brighton. The map was issued by the tramway company. The tramway operated between 1901 and 1939. This map was the fifth edition in 1929 and sold for one penny. (per Wikipedia) The company "operated an extensive network of routes in the first four decades of the 20th century." what is interesting to note in the Wikipedia entry is the frequency of service. Those trams operating out of the Aquarium location ran at intervals of 4 minutes to 10 minutes. It must have been easy to get around in Brighton in the first four decades of the 20th century. The map shows other transportation lines. The Brighton and Rottingdean Electric Railroad tracks are shown. The train ran through the surf area to connect the town of Rottingdean to the Volk's Electric Railway. The system was on 9 1/2 miles of streets using 18 miles of rail so it was mostly double tracked. The state, "starting point for all routes is at the Aquarium Terminus on the Sea Front from which they radiate out like the spokes of a wheel." (booklet text accompanying map) Suggested walks are numbered on the map and keyed to the booklet. This is a very nice presentation, especially for the then princely sum of a penny!
